Onkaparinga Dementia Friendly Alliance

Vision: Onkaparinga region is a place, where people living with dementia, and their families and carers, feel empowered, respected and are included and supported by a dementia-aware, engaged and active community.

Aim: To contribute to making Onkaparinga a dementia-friendly community through the development of the Onkaparinga Dementia Friendly Alliance (ODFA). The ODFA brings together people living with dementia, business and community stakeholders and other members of the community. The purpose of bringing the Onkaparinga community together is to coordinate and facilitate activities which will strongly contribute to creating the Onkaparinga region as one that is dementia-friendly, respectful of people with dementia and their carers and that empowers people with dementia to actively participate in community life.

We believe people living with dementia should be able to:

• Find their way around their community, so they are safe and feel secure.

• Confidently access local facilities and services, so they are connected and empowered.

• Maintain their social networks, so they belong and feel valued.

Most people living with dementia live in the community. However, national surveys of people living with dementia and their care partners found that they often feel socially isolated and wish they had more opportunities to interact with people in the community and to participate in social or other activities. Further, the National Framework for Action on Dementia 2015–2019 identified the need to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their support networks by building awareness, acceptance and understanding of dementia in the community.

These principles of inclusion are grounded in the international work undertaken by the World Health Organisation on age-friendly cities and are echoed in the South Australian Age Friendly SA Strategy. In addition to the international Dementia Friendly Communities movement. A dementia-friendly community is described as a “place where people living with dementia are supported to live a high-quality life with meaning, purpose and value”.

Dementia Friendly Awareness and Education

The Onkaparinga Dementia Friendly Alliance wants to transform the way we think, act and talk about dementia. A recent survey by Dementia Australia found people living with dementia and their carers reported that they experience embarrassing situations, feel strongly disconnected, feel less competent and sometimes feel useless.

By becoming a Dementia Friend, and increasing your awareness of dementia and its impacts, you can help a family members, friends, neighbours or co-workers living with dementia feel accepted, included and involved.

To raise awareness about dementia and encourage you to become a Dementia Friend we will hold regular Dementia Friend Awareness and Education sessions where you will become a recognised Dementia Friend and obtain your dementia friend badge and you will build your understanding of

• Dementia

• The challenges faced by people living with dementia

• What a dementia friendly community means to people living with dementia

• How to support people living with dementia to stay connected.
